Messezentrum Salzburg has been a permanent feature of the Austrian and international trade fair landscape since 1973.
Back then, the governments of the city and province of Salzburg, and the Chambers of Commerce in Salzburg, founded the Salzburger Ausstellungs Zentrum Ges.m.b.H. This marked the beginning of the building of three expo halls in a part of the town known as Liefering, right next to the motorway. A total of 10 halls were erected in the period up to 1984, without any interruption of trade fair activity. In the following decades, due to its central location at the heart of Austria and its close proximity to Bavaria – just across the border – the exhibition centre was in great demand as a venue for events and became an important catalyst for business in the region.
In 2000 the name of the company was changed from Salzburger Ausstellungs Zentrum Ges.m.b.H. to Messezentrum Salzburg GmbH marking the start of a new phase in the history of the exhibition and trade fair centre.
2003 saw the opening of the Salzburgarena. The venue accommodates up to 5900 visitors, has a cutting-edge dome structure and is one of the largest and most contemporary event halls in western Austria. The Salzburgarena offers a stage, bar, bistro and a VIP lounge. Alongside the renting out of the expo halls and the Salzburgarena, the company is increasingly taking responsibility for the agendas of the operating company – and also establishing its own exhibition themes.
In the period up to 2006 another five halls were added to the complex.
In 2011 the old halls 10 and 15 were demolished to make way for a new 15,000m² multifunctional hall built for €34 million in a mere six and a half months. That year Messezentrum Salzburg GmbH also staged eleven successful fairs of its own.
The new approximately 2000m² congress and meeting area in hall 10 went into operation on the 21st of August 2012. Since then the Salzburg venue has also been able to accommodate up to 5000 guests at large-scale congresses, as well as congresses with accompanying exhibitions.
About 27 years after the centre opened (1973), the owners of Messezentrum Salzburg GmbH decided to completely overhaul and renovate hall 1, the entrance and the first floor.
Hall 1 was modernised, as were the respective entrance area, the upper floor, the upstairs restaurant area and the Messezentrum Salzburg GmbH offices. 30 years after it was originally built, hall 1 was once again equipped and ready to accommodate an immense diversity of events in style.
This was another significant step towards guaranteeing that the venue remains an attractive proposition for the staging of exhibitions, trade fairs, congress and other events. The multifunctionality of the facility ensures areas and rooms can be used for a wide range of events and we constantly work to make sure this is always the case.
